Handstands Aren’t Just for the Young.

Our Seniors Prove It Weekly.

Most people think handstands are for the young, the fearless, or the “gymnast type.” But our seniors prove them wrong — every single week.

They’ve trained with us for months (some, years) — through both group classes and personal training — building the kind of strength and adaptability that carries far beyond the walls of the studio.

Handstands, scaled appropriately, are a training tool — not a party trick.

Why handstands for over-60s?

Because handstands (when scaled safely) mimic real-life chaos:

  • Unexpected falls
  • Sudden pushes
  • Shifting weight under pressure

And that matters, because as we age, the goal isn’t “perfect movement” — it’s being able to respond when life is imperfect.
Public health guidelines also emphasize that older adults benefit from strength work and balance training to maintain function and independence.

What they’re really training (besides being upside down)

In the process, they develop:

  • Balance (and confidence when balance is challenged)
  • Load tolerance through wrists and shoulders
  • Vestibular adaptability (your inner-ear balance system learns through exposure + practice)
  • Spatial awareness (where am I in space? how do I organize my body?)
  • Resilience under unfamiliar scenarios

A quick note on vestibular training: many vestibular rehab approaches are built on a simple idea —
the brain can be retrained through graded practice to interpret balance signals more accurately.

But what about the wrists and shoulders?

This is usually the first worry — and it’s a valid one. We don’t “throw” anyone into full handstands. We build tolerance progressively: angles first, then time, then small increases in load. That’s also why strength training is a non-negotiable as we age — it supports tissues, joints, and day-to-day capability.

It’s not about tricks.

And here’s the thing — it’s not about chasing tricks. It’s about learning to trust your body, play with movement, and stay curious… at any age.

If they can keep showing up for their goals — what’s stopping you?

Get stronger for everyday life — safely, progressively, and at your own pace.
