From Shoulder Pain Back to Badminton: Why the Whole Body Matters

When Serene first came to The Beacon Movement, she had stopped playing badminton — a sport she loved.

Her shoulders were painful, and even lifting her arms overhead had become difficult.

Her goal was simple: she wanted to get back to badminton.

But returning to the sport wasn’t simply about making her shoulders stronger.

A badminton swing is more than a shoulder movement

When we watch someone swing a badminton racquet, it’s easy to focus on the arm and shoulder.

But the movement involves much more.

The legs, hips, trunk, shoulder and arm all contribute to the movement. The body needs to coordinate these different parts to create and transfer force efficiently.

When the rest of the body isn’t contributing effectively, the shoulder may end up taking on more of the work.

So for Serene, we looked beyond the painful area.

Building the whole body

Our work focused on rebuilding her strength and mobility while helping her understand how to use her whole body together.

We worked on her:

  • Lower-body strength
  • Hip mobility and control
  • Trunk strength and coordination
  • Shoulder strength and mobility
  • Whole-body movement patterns
  • Coordination between different parts of the body

The goal wasn’t simply to make one part of her body stronger.

It was to help her body work together more effectively for the demands of the activity she wanted to return to.

Over time, movement became easier.

She became stronger and more confident in what her body could do.

And step by step, she began moving towards doing what she loves again.

Rehabilitation is about more than getting out of pain

For us, rehabilitation doesn’t end when pain decreases.

The bigger question is…

What does this person want to be able to do again?

For Serene, that was badminton.

For someone else, it might be carrying their child, hiking, returning to a favourite sport, lifting weights, travelling comfortably, or simply feeling confident in their body again.

That goal matters because it gives rehabilitation a direction.

We can work on strength, mobility and movement capacity — not just for the sake of exercise, but to help someone return to the activities that matter to them.

From rehabilitation, to prehab, to performance, our aim is to help people build a body that can support the life they want to live.

And we’re very happy to see Serene taking those steps towards the badminton court again.
