Protecting Women’s Knees Starts With Smarter Strength Training
“Just Get Stronger” Isn’t Enough — Especially for Women
You know how people always say, “just get stronger”?
Well — how you build that strength actually matters. Especially if you’re a woman.
After puberty, women’s hips naturally widen. This changes the way force travels through the body — particularly at the knees and ankles.
How women often load differently
When landing, decelerating, or changing direction, women tend to load differently:
- More upright torso (less knee bend)
- Knees collapsing inward more easily
- More quad-dominant patterns, with less hamstring and glute contribution
On their own, these aren’t “wrong.”
But without the right control and coordination, they can increase strain on the
ACL and knee joint — especially during sport, fatigue, or unexpected movement.
Why strength alone isn’t enough
This is why simply chasing strength numbers doesn’t always translate to safer movement.
Strength without control is like horsepower without brakes.
What we really need is the ability to:
- Maintain alignment under load
- Control knee position during single-leg work
- Coordinate hips, knees, and ankles together
Training control, not just force
Instead of just loading heavier and hoping for the best, we train control, stability, and smart loading.
Exercises like step-ups and lateral step-downs aren’t flashy — but they’re incredibly effective.
They teach your body how to:
- Control knee alignment in single-leg positions
- Distribute load through hips and hamstrings
- Stay organised when force increases
Why this matters for real life
This isn’t just about gym exercises. When control is trained properly, your body already knows what to do when you land, pivot, or change direction — without conscious effort. That’s the difference between:- Working out
- Training intelligently
